Brad Arnold, the lead singer, songwriter and founding member of US rock band 3 Doors Down, has died aged 47 following a battle with cancer, the band announced on social media.
“He will be deeply missed and forever remembered,” the band said in a statement shared on X on Saturday.
Arnold revealed in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with stage four clear cell renal carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer that had spread to his lungs. At the time, he said he was not afraid of the illness but expressed disappointment that the band had been forced to cancel an upcoming tour.
“I have no fear, I really sincerely am not scared of it at all,” he said in a video message to fans, asking them to keep him in their prayers.
Formed in Mississippi in the mid-1990s, 3 Doors Down rose to prominence in the early 2000s with a string of rock hits including Kryptonite, Here Without You, When I’m Gone and Loser. Arnold wrote Kryptonite, the band’s breakout single, when he was just 15 years old.

In its statement, the band described Arnold as a key creative force who helped define mainstream rock by blending post-grunge sounds with emotionally direct songwriting that resonated with everyday listeners.
Arnold was also the band’s original drummer before becoming its lead vocalist. Another founding member, guitarist Matt Roberts, died in 2016 aged 38.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, 3 Doors Down enjoyed sustained success on rock and pop radio. The band won three Billboard Music Awards, and their debut album, The Better Life, was the 18th biggest-selling album of 2000 in the US, according to Billboard.
Beyond music, Arnold spoke openly about his struggles with alcoholism and his recovery, revealing that he had been sober since 2016. In a 2023 interview, he said he once used alcohol to cope with pre-show nerves and loneliness.
In 2004, the band founded the Better Life Foundation, a charity supporting children in need of food, shelter and medical assistance. Arnold said seeing the impact of the foundation’s work had been deeply meaningful to him.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Jennifer.
