Statistics Canada has begun collecting data for the 2026 Census of Population in select northern and remote communities across Canada, marking the first phase of the national census process.
The agency says census collection for the remainder of the country is scheduled to begin in May 2026.
The Census of Population is conducted every five years and provides a comprehensive picture of Canada’s population and housing characteristics. Census data are used by governments, Indigenous organizations, businesses and community groups to support planning, policy development and the delivery of services such as health care, education, transportation and emergency services. For many communities, the census represents the most complete and reliable source of local population data.
In northern and remote areas, census collection is carried out earlier to account for unique geographic and logistical challenges, including limited internet access and seasonal travel conditions. Households in these communities will receive a census invitation letter delivered in person by an enumerator.
Residents who are unable to complete the census questionnaire online will be offered support from an enumerator, who can assist them in completing the questionnaire in person or by phone. Statistics Canada emphasises that participation in the census is essential to ensure that communities are accurately represented.
“Ensuring that Canada’s northern, remote and Indigenous communities are fully represented in census data is a key priority for Statistics Canada. Census data is the most detailed source of information available to decision-makers. It is used to support the development and implementation of policies, programs and services for First Nations people, Métis and Inuit communities, organisations, and governments. The participation of Northern, remote and Indigenous communities is essential to ensure we capture reliable and representative data.” – André Loranger, Chief Statistician of Canada
To help reduce language barriers and support participation, census questions have been translated into 15 Indigenous languages. This initiative aims to make the census more accessible and inclusive for respondents in Indigenous and northern communities.
Statistics Canada encourages residents who receive a census invitation to participate promptly, noting that accurate census information helps ensure communities receive appropriate representation and resources.
