Liam Rosenior believes Cole Palmer is nearing a return to full fitness and will soon be able to feature more regularly for Chelsea.

The 23-year-old has endured an injury-disrupted campaign and is yet to complete back-to-back 90-minute appearances this season. Palmer was introduced from the bench during Chelsea’s defeat at Arsenal on Tuesday, having played the full match against West Ham the previous weekend.

Speaking ahead of his side’s trip to Wolves, Rosenior said the club is carefully managing Palmer’s minutes amid a demanding schedule, with an eye on the latter stages of the season.

“You want all of your players to be 100 per cent, 100 per cent of the time, but that’s just not going to happen with the schedule we have,” Rosenior said. “I’m trying to get the very best out of him and my team at the same time.

“It’s not frustration. It’s about taking into account the number of games we have so we’re still very strong come April and May.

“It’s day by day — making sure he feels right and can contribute in the way he wants to. Very soon, I’m sure, he’ll be in a place where he can play every minute of every game.”

Rosenior added that Palmer’s versatility remains a key asset, insisting: “His best position is on the pitch.”
